Geography

The territory of Hong Kong is divided into 3 main parts - Hong Kong, Kowloon and New Territories.

Hong Kong - is the name for the island itself, which was the first place in the area to be settled by the British and forms the first and original part of the British colony. The centre of Hong Kong is the area between Central and Causeway Bay, which forms the skyline of skyscrapers shown in most photos. Most tourists head to this area.

Kowloon - the mainland, located on the opposite side of Hong Kong Island, became part of the British colony in the second half of the 18th century. It is more of a residential part of the self-governing territory, but there are many tourist attractions here as well. The area is one of the most densely populated places on earth.

TheNew Territories, an area that makes up about 90% of what is now Hong Kong, was leased by the British from the Chin Dynasty for 99 years in 1898. The area is located north of Kowloon. It is suitable for hiking and there are several historic dwellings of indigenous people of tourist interest (such as the Ping Shan Heritage Trail).
